Super King vs King Size Bed: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

King is already the UK's most popular bed size for couples, so the super king vs king question isn't whether a king is "big enough" — it already is — it's whether the extra space a king super king bed offers is worth the extra room it demands and the extra cost it usually carries.

The Actual Size Difference

A King measures 150 x 200cm. A Super King measures 180 x 200cm — 30cm wider, with the same length. That's a meaningful jump: 30cm of extra width is roughly the space of an additional pillow's worth of room per side, which is exactly where couples tend to feel it most.

Who Actually Benefits From the Upgrade

• Couples who feel cramped in a King, particularly if one or both partners move around a lot during the night, or if there's a size difference between partners that makes a standard King feel tight
• Anyone sharing the bed with children or pets regularly, where the extra width absorbs an additional body without pushing either partner to the edge
• Taller sleepers, though it's worth noting Super King doesn't add length over King, only width — someone needing more length should look at a bespoke size rather than assuming Super King solves that specifically

When King Is Still the Better Choice

A Super King needs meaningfully more room to feel comfortable, not just to physically fit. As a rough guide, a King suits a room from around 3.0 x 3.0 metres, while a Super King is best in a room of 3.6 x 4.0 metres or larger, so there's still enough walking space on both sides once the bed is in place. In a smaller room, a Super King can end up dominating the space to the point where the extra sleeping width isn't worth the loss of usable floor space around it.

Whichever size you land on, both super king mattresses and king mattresses are widely available across our range, so the size decision and the mattress choice can be made independently — better a good night's sleep on the right size than a compromise on either.

Is the Cost Difference Worth It?

Because a Super King uses meaningfully more material — frame, mattress, bedding — it typically costs more than a King across nearly every product range, bedding included, on an ongoing basis, not just the one-off bed purchase. Whether that's worth it comes down to how much you'd genuinely use the extra width; if a King never feels cramped for you, the upgrade is unlikely to justify itself.

Making the Decision

Upgrade to a Super King if your room comfortably fits one and you've actually felt short of space in a King — sharing with children or pets, a size mismatch between partners, or simply wanting more room to spread out. If neither applies and your room is on the smaller side, a King remains the more practical choice for most couples.
