How to Measure Your Bedroom for a New Bed (With a Simple Checklist)

It's easy to pick a bed size based on what fits the mattress alone, and only discover after delivery that the room feels cramped or a door won't open properly. A few minutes of measuring before you order avoids both problems.

The Measurements That Actually Matter

• Room length and width at floor level, wall to wall, not just an estimate. Note any alcoves, sloped ceilings, or radiators that reduce usable floor space beyond the basic rectangle.
• Doorway width and any turns in the hallway leading to the room — a bed base and mattress need to physically travel through these spaces during delivery, not just fit in the final room.
• Clearance around the bed once placed — not just where the frame sits, but the walking space you need around it. A comfortable minimum is around 60cm on the sides you'll walk past regularly, more if you want room to fully open wardrobe doors or drawers nearby.
• Footboard or headboard height, if you're considering a sleigh bed or a bed with a tall upholstered headboard — these add to the room's visual footprint even when they don't add to the floor footprint.

A Simple Room-Fit Checklist

1. Measure the room's total floor length and width. 2. Subtract any fixed obstructions (radiators, sloped ceiling zones, alcoves). 3. Add your chosen bed's actual footprint (check the specific product's dimensions, not just the size name). 4. Add clearance space on each side you'll walk past or need to access. 5. Check that the remaining total doesn't exceed your room's usable floor space. 6. Separately confirm doorway and hallway width for delivery access.

Matching Bed Size to Room Size

As a rough starting point: a Single or Small Double comfortably suits a room from around 2.7 x 2.7 metres upward, a Double or King from around 3.0 x 3.0 metres, and a Super King is generally best in a room of 3.6 x 4.0 metres or larger, so there's still comfortable walking space on both sides. These are practical minimums for comfort, not hard limits — a smaller room can still take a larger bed if you're willing to sacrifice walking space on one side.
